The upgrade of an item allows players to raise the item level for equippable items like weapons, armor and trinkets above a certain threshold. They can be obtained at any upgrader NPC using the appropriate currency.

Upgrade components are slotted into equipment to offer bonus effects and attribute bonuses. Most of these upgrades are slot-restricted, but a few are universal.

Rerolling

A player is able to reroll an upgrade for an item in Diablo 4. This is accomplished by using the Level Up feature, which stops your game and shows four randomly chosen upgrades. The more powerful the upgraded item is the more expensive it will cost.

In general, weapons have a more value in trade when upgraded fully because of their higher base damage. However, there are some weapons that offer a high value of trade even without upgrading because they offer useful stats that are appropriate for certain builds (e.g. Whistan's Shield for FB sorc's). There are also some unique and set items that don't need upgrading since they have minimal requirements or benefits from upgrading (e.g. Naj's Puzzler staff, Goldwrap).

Certain sets have set bonuses that give additional effects if Link wears the entire set. These bonuses are helpful in certain situations, like when exploring the Gerudo Desert and in dungeons. The Desert Voe Set, for example, has the Stealth Up feature that makes it easier to sneak past enemies.

There are also universal upgrades that can be incorporated into any type of equipment. These upgrades have lower rewards than the ones that are restricted to certain types however they are much easier to obtain. Certain upgrades can be made into gems by a jeweler, and can be used to upgrade any trinket slot. Other upgrade components are inorganic augmentations that can be slotted into weapon accessories. They offer a small benefit that doesn't increase damage.

Requirements

Upgrades are an essential part of improving the power and effectiveness of your characters during combat. Upgrades can boost an item's stats, or even add a prefix or suffix. The game should display more information on its compare interface on upgrades, like: "X stats gained, or X stats lost." But, this is not practical to implement due to the many layers of complexity are involved in the comparison process. There simply isn't enough space in the UI to implement it correctly.

A script that examines the requirements of an item's upgrade before allowing the item to be upgraded is a different option. This is a good option for systems with only a small amount of upgradeable items and a few upgrade dependencies. A sword can be upgraded from Sword+1 to Sword+2. A script could look for the Item Definition attribute for every upgrade, and then set the Item Status to "upgraded" in order to show that the upgrade was valid.

This solution is more flexible, but requires some extra code. It's also not the best choice for very complex systems.

Another option is to allow players to upgrade their weapons and armor. These upgrades, often referred to as Reforges by some, improve the stats of the item and reduce its cost. The power of reforges varies, but the Orb of Transmutation or Orb of Embrace are the most powerful.

Costs

Upgrades to gear can boost its physical strength, spell power and health (for armor and rings) or provide bonuses while it's in your inventory. You can either make upgrade components or purchase them from vendors. They can also be looted, dropped from other players, on the Trading Post, or as an incentive. Upgrade components can be put into weapons, armor and trinkets. They can also be connected to gathering tools. However, most upgrade components can't be replaced or salvaged except with the help of an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is glyphs. They can be salvaged by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or the Ascended Salvage tool.

Depending on the type of item, upgrading it could cost Dilithium or gold. Some upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The number of crests and Flightstones needed to upgrade an item is contingent on the gear's level and the maximum upgrade level is set by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest level are costly particularly when it comes to upgrading PvE gear.

Upgrades to items can alter the ammunition type of a weapon or size of the damage die and size, alter its operational or unwieldy weapon's property, or alter the hand requirements. Some upgrades can change the appearance of the weapon.

While boosting  this link  is the main goal of item upgrades but you should take into consideration the cost of upgrading an item prior to making an investment. Spend your gold on rare items, and not on items that are of the common or magic tier. These items aren't worth upgrading, and rare items will soon surpass them.

Ask your guild members for their opinion if you are unsure whether an upgrade is worthwhile. There may be cheaper upgrades at a lower cost. It's best to upgrade your equipment as quickly as you can, because upgrades will cost more in time. However, if you're unable to pay for the upgrade, it might be best to wait until you are able to. This will allow you to maximize your potential in the game.
